Legwork
Privacy Policy
Last updated — September 8, 2026
Legwork is a relay-race team coordination app for iOS and Android. This policy describes what information Legwork collects, how it is used, and who it is shared with.
What we collect
When you create or join a race team, Legwork collects:
- Your name
- Your email address — optional. You can join a team without one; runners without an installed device may have no email on file at all.
- Reference pace data — a recent training time and distance, used to project your expected pace for race legs
- Role and van/leg assignments you or your captain set
- Handoff timestamps recorded during the race, when a runner starts and finishes each leg
- Team name and race selection
We do not collect payment information, government ID, or any data beyond what is needed to run a relay race roster.
Location: the exchanges you passed, not a track
We list Coarse Location on our App Store page, and we would rather tell you too much than too little about what that means.
What it is: a handoff record stores which exchange it was and what time it happened. Exchanges are fixed, published places on the course, so that record does say you were at a particular place at a particular minute, under your name. That is location information and we declare it as such.
What it is not: Legwork asks for no location permission,
and neither app contains the code to read one — on Android the Bluetooth
permission carries the neverForLocation flag, a formal declaration
to the system that we are not using a Bluetooth scan to work out where a phone
is. Nothing measures where you are while you run. For the length of a leg your
phone is out of contact with everybody, which is how a relay works before it is
anything we designed. We know the checkpoints you passed, because a teammate
wrote them down, and nothing in between them.
If you never installed Legwork
A relay team is a roster, and a captain fills one in before anybody has the app. So we may hold your name, your pace and the times recorded for your legs because a teammate entered them — and we may hold your email address because they used it to send you an invitation, whether or not you accepted it. You do not have to install anything for that to be true, and we would rather say so than let you find out.
You have the same choices as anyone else, and you do not need an account to use them. Write to support@legwork.team with your name and your team's name and we will remove you from the roster and delete what we hold, or tell your captain to remove you and it goes with the team. See Deleting your data.
How your data is used
This information runs the app's core function: projecting pace, coordinating exchange times between runners, and keeping your team's roster and race progress in sync across everyone's devices. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not sell it.
How your data is shared
Between your team's devices. Legwork syncs race data two ways:
- Directly over Bluetooth between phones that are physically near each other — for example, runners and van-mates at an exchange point. This is short-range peer-to-peer sync, not location tracking: Legwork does not collect or transmit GPS location, and on Android its Bluetooth scanning permission is explicitly flagged to the operating system as not-for-location.
- Through Legwork's own server, so devices that are not in Bluetooth range of each other — the two vans, hours apart on course — still end up with the same roster and race data. This server is operated by us and hosted on Fly.io infrastructure in the United States.
With weather data providers. To show a forecast for each leg, Legwork sends race-course coordinates — fixed, public exchange locations, not your personal location — to Open-Meteo, a third-party weather API. No runner-identifying information is included in these requests.
With our mail provider. When Legwork sends you something — a sign-in code, an invitation from a captain, or your team's post-race report — your email address and the contents of that message pass through Postmark, a third-party sending service, in the United States. They send on our behalf and hold it only to do that. If you never give us an address, nothing about you reaches them at all.
We do not share your data with advertisers, data brokers, or any other third party, and we do not use any analytics or tracking SDKs. Open-Meteo and Postmark above are service providers doing a specific job for us, not parties we share data with for their own purposes.
Your choices
- Leaving a team removes it from your device. If you are a team's captain, you can also delete the team from the server entirely, removing it for every device on that team.
- Email is optional. You can use Legwork without ever providing one.
- Your name is yours to set, and it can differ in every race. Nothing checks it and no two teams are joined by it. See How little you can tell us.
- Every invitation and report carries an unsubscribe link, and one tap is enough — no page to fill in and no account needed. Sign-in codes have no unsubscribe link, because they only ever arrive when somebody types that address into the sign-in box.
- If you have an account you can switch off all mail, which overrides every team you are on. Your captain can put you back on their team's list if you ask them to; they cannot reach past that account-level switch.
- You can contact us (below) to request deletion of your data from our server. See Deleting your data for the full process.
Children's privacy
Legwork is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
